German LED Electronics Manufacturer Optimizes SMT Production Through On-Site Engineering Support

For electronics manufacturers producing intelligent LED control products, the success of a new SMT line depends not only on equipment installation but also on how well the production process is adjusted for real PCB requirements.
A German electronics manufacturer needed to introduce a reliable automatic SMT production line for multiple LED control products. During the commissioning stage, I.C.T engineer Andy provided 10 days of on-site technical support, helping the customer solve production issues, optimize machine parameters, verify different PCB models, and improve overall production stability.
The project focused on real manufacturing challenges, including PCB MARK recognition, placement machine troubleshooting, solder paste printing adjustment, product changeover, and production output verification.
Building an SMT Production Line for LED Control Products

The customer’s production requirement was focused on intelligent LED control electronics, where different PCB models needed to be manufactured on the same SMT production line.
The complete production line included:
- PCB loading system
- Solder paste printing equipment
- SMT placement machine
- Reflow soldering system
- PCB transfer conveyors
- Cooling conveyor
- NG/OK PCB unloading system
The main equipment included I.C.T-4034 automatic solder paste printer, N10P placement machine, S6 reflow oven, C500 transfer conveyor, CC500 cooling conveyor, and NU460 NG/OK unloader.
During installation, I.C.T engineers completed equipment positioning, machine connection, SMEMA communication setup, and production preparation to ensure the complete line could operate as an integrated system.
For manufacturers planning similar projects, I.C.T also provides experience from other industries, including a beauty electronics SMT and DIP manufacturing project where production flexibility and process stability were key requirements.
Solving PCB Recognition Challenges During Production
One of the first challenges appeared during PCB recognition.
The customer’s PCB design used a non-standard MARK point, which affected automatic recognition during the printing process.
Instead of modifying the customer’s existing PCB design, the engineering team adjusted the recognition method and optimized the printing setup according to the actual board condition.
The MARK opening method was manually adjusted and tested to ensure stable PCB recognition during production.
This type of optimization is important for electronics manufacturers because different PCB designs may have different layouts, components, and production requirements.
Optimizing Solder Paste Printing and SMT Process Stability
Solder paste printing is one of the most important processes affecting SMT production quality.
During commissioning, the engineering team optimized the printing process and adjusted parameters related to printing stability, including issues caused by PCB characteristics, stencil conditions, and production requirements.
The customer team also received practical guidance on operating the automatic solder paste printing machine, including production adjustment, basic troubleshooting, and daily operation.
By improving the printing process before mass production, the team helped create a more stable foundation for later placement and soldering processes.
Troubleshooting Placement Machine and Material Handling Issues
During actual production testing, several issues were identified on the placement side.
One issue involved the IC tray, where the system could not locate the required tray and caused the TABLE to stop.
The engineering team checked the setup and adjusted the related parameters to restore normal operation.
Another issue involved a Z-axis abnormal condition on the placement machine. After troubleshooting, the Z-axis O2 control card was replaced and tested to confirm stable operation.
The customer team also received training on the LED SMT pick and place machine, including operation methods, production adjustment, and problem handling during daily manufacturing.
Production Testing With Real Customer Boards
After initial debugging, the production line entered actual PCB testing.
On April 13, the customer started sample production and functional verification.
During a 150-piece production test:
- Cycle time: approximately 19 seconds per piece
- Actual placement performance: around 4.8K CPH
- Production output: approximately 184 PCS/H
A separate test was carried out with a PCB containing around 80 different components:
- Production output: approximately 34 PCS/H
- Actual placement rate: around 2.7K CPH
These results demonstrate an important point in SMT manufacturing: machine speed and actual production output are influenced by many factors, including PCB design, component quantity, product structure, and changeover requirements.
The recorded data helped the customer understand the actual production capability of the line under real manufacturing conditions.
Supporting Multiple LED Product Changeovers

The customer needed to produce different LED control boards using the same SMT line.
During commissioning, several product changeovers were tested, including different LED board models.
The engineering team optimized:
- PCB recognition settings
- Production parameters
- Program setup
- Material preparation
- Machine operation procedures
This helped the customer improve flexibility when switching between different PCB products.
For electronics manufacturers managing multiple products, production flexibility is often as important as machine placement speed.
Reflow Process Optimization and Final Production Verification
After component placement, stable soldering performance was also verified during production testing.
The engineering team provided guidance on the LED SMD reflow soldering oven operation, including process adjustment and production parameter optimization.
By April 18, three different customer products were running normally, and the machines were operating under full-load conditions.
The customer completed the acceptance record with an OK result.
Customer Factory Video
The following video shows the customer factory environment and the SMT production line after installation and commissioning:
The factory video provides a direct view of the production environment and the installed equipment, helping manufacturers better understand the practical application of the SMT line.
Engineering Support Beyond Equipment Installation
The success of an SMT project depends on more than delivering machines.
During this German LED electronics project, I.C.T provided support covering:
- Equipment installation
- SMEMA communication setup
- PCB MARK optimization
- Machine troubleshooting
- Production testing
- Parameter adjustment
- Operator training
The project also reflects I.C.T’s experience in supporting different electronics manufacturing requirements. Similar engineering optimization work was provided in a European SMT DIP and coating production project, where production preparation and technical training were important parts of the project.
For factories introducing new SMT capabilities, practical commissioning support can help reduce production risks and improve the transition from installation to stable manufacturing.
Efficient PCB Handling for Stable Production Flow
In addition to the core SMT processes, stable PCB transfer is also important for continuous production.
The project included an NG OK PCB unloading system to help separate qualified and rejected boards after inspection and improve production management.
A complete SMT production flow requires cooperation between printing, placement, soldering, handling, and quality control processes.
